Amsterdam’s nightlife has long been legendary. Once a bustling port where sailors sought the pleasures of the Red Light District, today the city draws bachelor parties and weekend revelers. But beyond the indulgence, there’s a more local, laid-back side to Amsterdam’s nightlife—one rooted in tradition and craft brewing.
Our tour begins on the Zeedijk, the historic sea dike that made Amsterdam’s development possible. Here, we’ll visit Café In ‘t Aepjen, a centuries-old bar that survived the great fire of the 15th century. Stepping inside feels like stepping back in time, with its wooden interior and curious artifacts—each with its own story, including the legend behind the bar’s name, which translates to “In the Monkeys.”
As we continue, we’ll explore a handpicked selection of beloved local bars, sampling a range of Dutch beers from crisp blondes to rich wheat ales and bold IPAs. To balance our drinks, we’ll enjoy classic bar snacks—perhaps some herring, Dutch sausage, or a crispy kroket.
No exploration of Amsterdam’s drinking culture is complete without jenever. This juniper-infused spirit, the precursor to gin, comes in both oude (old) and jonge (young) varieties, each with distinct flavors. We’ll sip it the traditional way—bowing down for the first taste from a tulip-shaped glass filled to the brim.
